Mercado tows Meralco to big win vs Powerade
Flashy guard Sol Mercado turned himself into a one-man wrecking crew in the fourth quarter as he led the Meralco Bolts to a crucial 91-78 win over the Powerade Tigers last night in the 37th PBA Governors’ Cup at the Araneta Coliseum.
Held scoreless in the first three quarters, Mercado came up strong in the payoff period, where he scored all of his 15 points to outscore the entire Powerade squad that only managed 13 points in the pivotal quarter.
Meralco, thus, tallied its fourth victory in eight games, tying its victim’s record and improved its chances of securing one of six semifinal slots.
“It’s a great win for us, but the goal has not been achieved yet,” head coach Ryan Gregorio told PBA.ph.
Meralco import Mario West scattered a game-high 29 points, outscoring his counterpart Omar Sneed, who managed 23 points as the Tigers tasted thier second straight setback after pulling off four successive victories.
