The Philippine Institute for Volcanology and Seismology said on Thursday in a posted video of Mayon that the volcano “generated incandescent lava flows, pyroclastic density currents (PDC) or ‘uson,’ and rockfall,” with lava flows reaching “radial distances from the crater of ~3.7km in the Basud (east), ~1.6km in the Bonga (southeast), and ~1.3km in the Mi-isi Gullies as of 29 January 2026.”
In the last 24 hours until 12 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 30, 21 volcanic earthquakes, 351 rockfall events, and 64 pyroclastic density currents have been recorded, according to Phivolcs.
Based also on Phivolcs’ latest observation summary, Mayon also released 1,474 tons of sulfur dioxide and emitted a plume 1,000 meters above the crater, drifting northwest and west-southwest in the previous day.
The bureau also warned people that possible hazards such as rockfalls, landslides, avalanches; lava flow and fountaining; pyroclastic density currents; moderate-sized explosions; and lahars during heavy and prolonged rainfall can occur. /das
