MANILA, Philippines — A jailguard was killed and another was wounded when five inmates at the Bureau of Jail Manaement and Penology (BJMP) in Masbate attacked them and then escaped Tuesday night, Inspector Ayn Natuel, Bicol Philippine National Police (PNP) spokesman, said Wednesday.
The victim who was pronounced dead on arrival at the Cataingan district hospital was identified as Senior Jail Officer 1 Rene Danao, deputy jail warden.
Another jail guard identified as Jail Officer 2 Julius Cervantes is in critical condition,said Ayn.
The incident happend around 6:30 p.m. at the BJMP office Poblacion Palanas, Masbate.
Cervantes and Danao were on duty when the suspects identified as Rommel Padailap, Jessie Cabier and Romeo Olasla Jr. attacked them and then fled, said Ayn.
The suspects carted an M16 rifle, a shotgun and a short firearm of still unknown caliber, said Ayn.
Two of the inmates, Romulo Pason and Felipe Alargo, who was also wounded, were left behind, Ayn said.
