Gullas’ grandson to run for his seat in first district

REP. Rep. Eduardo Gullas of Cebu’s 1st district is fielding his 26-year-old grandson Gerald Anthony “Samsam” Gullas to run for his congressional seat next year.

Naga City Mayor Valdemar Chiong, an ally, said the three-term congressman is set to officially announce this today.

“Samsam” Gullas reportedly has the support of at least 5 out of 6 mayors in the 1st district, said Chiong.

“He has a big advantage because he has the support of five of the six mayors,” Chiong told radio dyLA.

Chiong was referring to himself and the mayors of Talisay City, Minglanilla, Carcar City and Sibonga.

Only San Fernando Mayor Antonio Canoy is not allied with Gullas.

Canoy, chairman of Liberal Party in the 1st district, is reportedly running for congressman in the district too.

Chiong said he and other other officials from Naga and Carcar cities were called by Gullas the patriarch for a meeting last week in his office in the University of the Visayas (UV).

In that meeting, Chiong said, Gullas told them of his decision after several consultations to support his grandson in the 1st district race.

Carcar City Mayor Nicepuro Apura, his vice mayor, councilors and barangay captains were also there, according to Chiong.

Chiong said they all promissed to support Samsam.

Samsam is the eldest son of Gerald Anthony “Didi” Gullas, who served as vice president for finance and administration of UV, a school owned by the Gullas family.

Samsam is the assistant vice president for finance and administration team manager of the UV Green Lancers basketball team.

Samsam will turn 27 in December.

He finished a bachelor of science degree in management and received a leadership award of President Arroyo in his batch,, Gullas said in an interview last December 2011.
