Mob mauls robber who stabbed UST stude, ‘tanod’

A robber ended up black and blue and behind bars after he stabbed and wounded a 21-year-old University of Santo Tomas graduate and the barangay tanod (village watchman) who came to the victim’s aid. Angry bystanders ganged up on Ryan San Pedro, a 22-year-old resident of Balut, Tondo, after he stabbed Jayson Apura and Rogelio Sales on Jose Abad Santos Avenue in Manila around 10:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Earlier, San Pedro and a cohort identified only as Anot approached Apura who was on his way to Tutuban Mall to buy a gift for his father. At knife-point, they ordered him to turn over all of his valuables and when Apura refused, San Pedro stabbed him and then Sales when he tried to help the victim. A group of bystanders, however, noticed the commotion and chased San Pedro and beat him up as Anot escaped. Police Officer 3 Romeo Fajardo of the Manila Police District Station 2 said that Apura had been jailed several times for robbery although he always managed to post bail.—Jaymee T. Gamil
