/ 08:13 AM June 20, 2012

THE inmate who complained that he was beaten up by a fellow inmate of the Cebu City Jail was  transferred to an isolation cell.

Oliver Ong was transferred to a cell where SPO1 Adonis Dumpit and a barangay tanod are also jailed, said Supt. Johnson Calub, warden of the Cebu City Jail in barangay Kalunasan.

Ong’s transfer came after his mother Nemia wrote President Benigno Simeon Aquino III to report that her son was beaten more than 100 times inside the jail facility.

In a phone interview, Calub said he thanked Mrs. Ong for bringing up the matter since it helped get immediate action.

The warden said Oliver, who is facing drug charges, clarified that   he was not a victim of hazing but maltreatment committed by an inmate who was already identified.

The warden refused to identify the inmate pending the filing of charges for serious physical injuries against him.

Calub assured that the incident will not happen again.

He said Mrs. Ong was satisfied with the jail management’s decision to transfer Oliver to another cell./CORRESPONDENT CHITO O. ARAGON
