More participants, longer distances in Red Cross run

LONGER routes will be offered during Philippine Red Cross-Cebu Chapter’s fifth staging of its annual fun run to be held at the Sumilon Road of the Cebu Business Park on July 29.

More participants are also expected to take part in this fund-raising event dubbed “Humanity Race.”

This is because of Cebu City’s regulation on running that strictly allows only one race each weekend. Last year, organizers of the Red Cross race were able to gather 1,300 runners. This year, they are expecting more since they won’t be going up against another running event on that day.

This year’s race will be having 4-kilometer, 8k and 16k categories. Last year, the race offered  3k, 6k and 12k categories.

“We are hoping that we will surpass the record we made last year so that we can generate more funds for the Philippine Red Cross,” said PRC-Cebu Board of Director Paul Benemerito during yesterday’s official launching of the running event at the PRC-Cebu office beside the Jose Rizal Memorial library.

PRC-Cebu has more than a thousand volunteers and members. They are tasked to the take care of the group’s six services that includes disaster preparedness, community and social services, nursing, blood letting and its youth organization.

“We are staging this running event because this is one way of showing to the public that PRC is visible and we are willing to help the community in times of need” added Benemerito./CORRESPONDENT DALE G. ROSAL
