MANILA, Philippines — The low-pressure area (LPA) inside the Philippine area of responsibility developed into Tropical Depression Wilma on Wednesday morning, the state weather bureau said.

According to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa), the weather system intensified into a cyclone at 8 am.

Pagasa last spotted Wilma over 700 kilometers east of Eastern Visayas at 4 a.m.

In previous weather forecasts, the state weather bureau warned that Wilma would make landfall in the eastern portion of the country, either in Bicol Region, Eastern Visayas, or Caraga.

Pagasa also anticipated that Wilma would track westward over the Visayas islands in the next few days, but this remains uncertain due to the then-LPA’s distance from the Philippine landmass. /das
