TAGUM CITY, Philippines—Governor Rodolfo Del Rosario on Tuesday said the provincial government of Davao del Norte is giving at least P1 million to help flood-hit Davao City.

The financial assistance is Davao del Norte’s way of showing solidarity with the city which was badly devastated by flash flood last week that killed at least 30 people, Del Rosario said.

“We have promised to extend assistance to the city and we are now honoring that commitment,” Del Rosario said.

During the celebration of Davao Del Norte’s 44th founding anniversary last July 1, Del Rosario had pledged to give P2 million cash assistance, but budget constraints and the damage brought by floods that swamped parts of the province on July 2 resulted in the adjustment of the amount of assistance.

The governor said he has requested the Sangguniang Panlalawigan (provincial legislative board) to immediately approve the aid allocation by Tuesday so he can give the check Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio.

The floods that hit the province last week displaced over 700 families in the three towns of Talaingod, Carmen and Braulio Dujali, and damaged hundreds of hectares of rice lands.

The nearby province of Compostela Valley had also sent 200 sacks of rice for the Davao City flood victims early in the week, according to Governor Arturo Uy.
