MANILA, Philippines—Three of the Manunuri ng Pelikulang Pilipino’s “10 Best Filipino Films” from the 1970s to the 1990s were directed by the late Lino Brocka. These are “Maynila sa Kuko ng Liwanag,” “Orapronobis” and “Insiang,” the first Filipino film screened at the Cannes Film Festival. Brocka, who made over 60 films about the marginalized sectors of society, was awarded the 1985 Ramon Magsaysay Award for Journalism, Literature and Creative Communication Arts and was posthumously named National Artist for Cinema in 1997.—Schatzi Quodala, Inquirer Research
