   Tropical depression may make Monday landfall in Cagayan, Aurora

MANILA, Philippines—A tropical depression outside the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR), which may develop into a super typhoon, is forecast to make landfall in Cagayan Valley or Aurora by Monday, the state weather bureau said Wednesday.

In its 11 a.m. bulletin, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said the tropical depression was tracked at 10 a.m. about 1,835 kilometers east of northeastern Mindanao, with maximum winds of 55 kilometers per hour (kph) and gusts up to 70 kph.

The tropical depression is moving west at 10 kph, is forecast to move northwest Thursday, and will maintain that direction through the forecast period.

Pagasa said that it may enter the PAR Friday night or Saturday and will be named Uwan. 

“After that, kikilos generally west-northwest, ka-level ng Bicol region. Pagsapit ng Sabado, aakyat ito bahagya, pa west-northwest moving towards dito sa northern or Central Luzon,” Pagasa weather specialist Benison Estareja said. 

(After that, it will move generally west-northwest, leveling with the Bicol region. On Saturday, it will move west-northwest towards northern or Central Luzon.)

“Maaaring sa mainland Cagayan Valley or Aurora magkaroon ng landfall scenario itong tatawagin nating Bagyong Uwan pagsapit ng Lunes ng umaga,” Estareja added.

(It may make landfall in mainland Cagayan Valley or Aurora, and we will call it Tropical Cyclone Uwan on Monday morning.)

Pagasa also said that the tropical depression may rapidly develop into a typhoon category by Friday and a super typhoon category by Saturday.

It added that the highest possible wind signal is Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 5 (TCWS).
