Kanlaon Volcano spews ash again

MANILA, Philippines — Kanlaon Volcano has once again emitted ash on Monday afternoon, said the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

According to Phivolcs, in a footage it released, the ash emission occurred at 1:47 p.m. and it lasted for exactly four minutes.

“This event generated grayish plumes that rose up to 150 meters above the crater before drifting to the west,” the institute said.

The volcano, which is the highest peak on Negros Island—and in Visayas—spewed ash just a few days after a minor explosive eruption was recorded at its summit crater on Friday night, generating a plume that rose about 2,000 meters and drifted northwest.

Phivolcs warned that after the minor eruption, ash emissions or minor eruptions may again occur.

Meanwhile, Alert Level 2 remains raised over the volcano, barring entry into its 4-kilometer permanent danger zone and flying within 4 kilometers from the volcano.

Sudden steam-driven or phreatic eruptions, as well as precursory magmatic activities, are also possible at this alert level. /apl
