Salome weakens into tropical depression

MANILA, Philippines – Salome weakened into a tropical depression on Thursday morning, just 10 hours after it intensified into a storm, the weather bureau said.
In its 8 am report, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said Salome was last located 85 kilometers southwest of Basco, Batanes, moving southwestward at 20 kilometers per hour (kph) over the Luzon Strait.
It has maximum sustained winds of 55 kph and gusts of up to 75 kph.

Pagasa also said that strong winds are expected to extend up to 200 kilometers from the cyclone’s center.
As a result, Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal (TCWS) No. 1 remains in effect for the northern and western portions of the Babuyan Islands and the northwestern portion of Ilocos Norte.
Meanwhile, the TCWS over Batanes has been lowered from Signal No. 2 to Signal No. 1, Pagasa added.
The tropical depression will continue to move “generally southwestward” and is forecast to weaken into a low-pressure area by Friday. /mcm
