Young engineers for training in DPWH

MANILA, Philippines — To infuse young blood into the scandal-rocked Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), Secretary Vince Dizon is reviving a program to train and hire young engineers.
“This is very good for us to revitalize the DPWH with fresh graduates, with new fresh engineers who have just passed or are just starting to work,” he said.
Dizon credited his predecessors, Rogelio “Babes” Singson and Jose “Ping” de Jesus, for suggesting the revival of the DPWH cadet engineering program at a meeting last Saturday. Singson launched that program, a 26-week course, in 2013.
Under the program, engineers took promotional examinations to avoid the “patronage system.” It was eventually dissolved after “outsiders” were allowed to get promotional slots.
The first batch of graduates included engineer Lara Marisse Esquibil, who was named acting undersecretary in place of Arrey Perez following his resignation last Friday.
