Remulla gets clearance for Ombudsman application

MANILA, Philippines — Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla has finally secured a clearance from the Office of the Ombudsman, one of the requirements set by the Judicial and Bar Council (JBC), which is screening applicants for the post of chief graftbuster.
Remulla confirmed on Wednesday that he had submitted the document to the JBC, which is in charge of recommending to President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. possible candidates for the Ombudsman post.
According to the JBC’s Revised Rules issued in 2020, applicants with pending criminal or administrative cases are disqualified from being nominated for appointment to any judicial post, as well as the positions of Ombudsman, Deputy Ombudsman, Special Prosecutor, or chair or regular member of the Legal Education Board.

Remulla has three pending cases before the Ombudsman—two in connection with his role in the arrest and transfer of former President Rodrigo Duterte to The Hague to stand trial before the International Criminal Court, and the last one in connection with the arrest of Cassandra Li Ong, Philippine offshore gaming operators hub Lucky South 99 Corp. representative.
