Marcos monitoring situation on Super Typhoon Nando – Castro

MANILA, Philippines—President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. is monitoring the weather situation brought about by Super Typhoon Nando (international name: Ragasa), Palace press officer Claire Castro said on Tuesday.

In a Viber message to reporters, Castro said Marcos is also receiving “constant updates” from Defense Secretary Gilbert Teodoro regarding the situation on the ground.

Nando exited the Philippine area of responsibility as of 8 a.m., according to the latest bulletin of the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa).

It was located 340 kilometers west-northwest of Calayan, Cagayan, moving west-northwest at 20 kilometers per hour (kph). Nando was packing maximum winds of 185 kph and gusts of up to 230 kph.

On Monday, Marcos said all government agencies are on alert and that preemptive measures have been put in place in anticipation of Nando’s onslaught.

“We have received reports from various provinces regarding Typhoon Nando. Strong winds are being experienced, but so far there has been no heavy rain,” Marcos said in a statement, as read by Castro in a Palace briefing.

“Preemptive evacuations have been conducted, and we are immediately responding to the needs of those in evacuation centers. We are closely monitoring the situation, and all government agencies are on alert to assist wherever and whenever needed,” he added. /das/abc
