Super Typhoon moving away from PH; Signal No. 4 in 3 areas

MANILA, Philippines — Super Typhoon Nando (international name: Ragasa) continues to move away from the Babuyan Islands and is forecast to weaken within the next 24 hours, even as Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal (TCWS) No. 4 remains in effect in three areas, according to the state weather bureau.

In its 8 p.m. cyclone update, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said that Nando’s eye was last spotted some 85 kilometers west-northwest of Calayan, Cagayan.

It is moving west at 20 kilometers per hour (kph), packing maximum sustained winds of 215 kph with gusts of up to 265 kph.

Meanwhile, Pagasa said Nando’s trough or extension and the southwest monsoon or “habagat”, will bring strong winds to the following areas on Tuesday:

  • Metro Manila
  • Central Luzon (areas not under wind signals)
  • Calabarzon
  • Bicol Region
  • Mimaropa
  • Visayas
  • Zamboanga Peninsula
  • Dinagat Islands

Based on its latest forecast, Pagasa said Nando will exit the country’s area of responsibility by Tuesday morning. /gsg
