Migrant boat sinks in Bahamas, at least 11 dead

NASSAU, Bahamas – A boa

t packed with migrants headed for the United States has sunk and at least 11 people have drowned, police here said.

Royal Bahamas Police Inspector Chrislyn Skippings said the death toll is expected to rise.

Skippings said Monday that seven people have been rescued and a search was under way for other survivors.

The 25-foot vessel had an estimated 28 people on board when it set off Sunday from the island of Abaco.

Skippings said the boat had engine trouble and began taking on water. The migrants were apparently heading to Florida.
