MANILA, Philippines – After a two-year delay, the construction of Metro Manila Subway Project’s (MMSP) Ortigas Station in Pasig City finally began on Wednesday, the Department of Transportation (DOTr) said.

The P488.5-billion project suffered delays partly due to right-of-way issues, according to the DOTr.

Though originally planned to be finished by 2028, DOTr Acting Secretary Giovanni Lopez said the completion of the Ortigas Station will take three years, and it will be fully operational after another two years, sometime in 2031.

“Many commuters will surely benefit from this [MMSP], especially since there are many workers in the business district of Ortigas,” Lopez added.

The MMSP, once completed, will be the first underground subway station in the Philippines, spanning approximately 35 kilometers.

With 17 stations, the railway is expected to service over 500,000 passengers every day from Valenzuela, Quezon City, Pasig, Taguig, Parañaque, and Pasay.

The subway line aims to cut the travel time from Quezon City to the Ninoy Aquino International Airport in Pasay City from 70 minutes to 45 minutes. /das
