CEBU CITY, Philippines — A power plant supervisor was killed while two workers of a shipbuilding company were critically injured in a motorcycle accident on  the national highway in Barangay (village) Arpili, Balamban town, about 64 kilometers northwest of Cebu City, Saturday.

The fatality was identified as Alexander Sotes, 54, of Sta. Cruz, Balamban, a supervisor of the Toledo Global Power Corp. in Sangi, Toledo City.

Sotes was driving his Honda Wave motorcycle on his way to work in Toledo when he overtook a multicab (multipurpose cab) loaded with fish at 6:45 a.m., encroaching on the opposite lane and colliding with Grandstar motorcycle traveling in the other direction.

Police Officer 2 Godofredo Dumdum of the Balamban Police Station said  Sotes was thrown off from his motorcycle. The helmet came off his head, which hit the bumper of the multicab and then the chasis.

Multicab driver Michael Besabella, 45, was able to stop the vehicle in time so it did not run over Sotes.

The passengers of the Grandstar motorcycle suffered serious injuries and were taken to the Balamban Provincial Hospital.

Like Sortes, Lloyd Tumbiga of Tabuela town and Nicanor Canduli, 38, of Balamban, were also on their way to work at Tsuneishi Heavy Industries when the accident happened. They were later transferred to the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center in Cebu City.

Dumdum said Besabella was detained at the police station pending determination if he had any liability in the death of Sotes.
