PNP HPG probes SUV using ‘wang-wang’ along Edsa

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine National Police Highway Patrol Group (PNP HPG) is investigating the owner or driver of a sport utility vehicle (SUV) flagged by a senator for allegedly illegally using a siren or “wang-wang” along Epifanio delos Santos Avenue (Edsa).

Sen. JV Ejercito pointed out the SUV in a social media post on Friday, saying in Filipino, “What a loud siren! Just because it’s an SUV, they think it can bully others on the street!”

In an interview with reporters in Camp Crame on Tuesday, HPG spokesperson Lt. Nadame Malang said the national police’s traffic unit tracked down the vehicle to a logistics company in Paco, Manila.

He noted that further investigation by police revealed the SUV had been sold two months ago to a private individual based in San Juan City.

“We were also able to personally speak with the owner of this vehicle. It was also found out that the owner is willing to surrender the siren (‘wang-wang’) and that the owner accepts the wrongdoing of the driver,” Malang explained.

He later said the siren was not installed in the vehicle when it was sold off and that it was attached by the new owner.

Malang further noted that, once determined, the driver of the vehicle may face a complaint for violating Presidential Decree No. 96, which pertains to the illegal use of sirens. — Nickola Marisse Nicolas, Inquirer.net trainee /das
