MANILA, Philippines—A man who police said suffered from a developmental disability was arrested Friday night for stabbing to death his mother, a former college dean, after reportedly watching a violent movie in Mandaluyong City.

SPO1 Ericson Buted, case investigator, refused to release the identities of both mother and son, citing  relatives’ request to protect the 26-year-old man, who he said was a special child suffering from autism.

He said the incident happened around 10 p.m. in the victim’s condominium unit in Palo Verde, Dansalan Garden in Barangay Malamig.

According to Buted, policemen responding to a call from the subdivision’s security guard found the 26-year-old alone in the unit with his already dead mother, a former college dean and professor.

Buted said that the victim had been stabbed in the neck and other parts of the body. Two bloodied kitchen knives were recovered from the scene.

Buted said he was looking into the possibility that the son had been influenced by external factors since there were reports that he had just watched a “violent movie” at that time. He said investigators were still confirming these reports.

He refused to disclose the title of the movie.

According to Buted, he was also looking into the statements of the victim’s neighbors, who said that at the time of the killing, the 26-year-old was receiving a scolding from his mother.

“The neighbors heard their voices. It wasn’t a confrontation, though. The mother was just reprimanding him about something, according to them,” Buted said, adding he still had to determine what the 50-year-old woman was reprimanding her son for.

Senior Superintendent Armando Bolalin, Mandaluyong police chief, told the Inquirer that parricide charges would be filed against the son as  soon as the National Center for Mental Health issued a certification attesting to his mental state.

Later in the day, though, Buted said that police would proceed to file the charges against the 26-year-old. He said  it would be the court that will determine whether or not the man should be held liable for killing his mother.
