Traffic cop wounded while arresting murder suspect in Laguna

MANILA, Philippines — A Philippine National Police Highway Patrol Group (PNP-HPG) officer was wounded while serving an arrest warrant against a wanted person in Laguna, police said.

A police report from the HPG identified the wounded cop as Maj. Ed Richard Pacana.

According to the HPG, personnel of the Laguna Provincial Highway Patrol Team were enforcing the warrant last Thursday in Sitio Mahada, Barangay Canlubang, Calamba City, against an unnamed murder suspect.

“When the warrant was being served, our suspect became aggressive and lunged at one of our operatives and wrestled him for his firearm,” HPG spokesperson Lt. Nadame Malang said in an interview with reporters in Camp Crame on Tuesday.

“This resulted in the firing of the gun, and it hit our team leader. For now, our team leader is recovering at the Global Care Medical Center, also in Canluban,” he added.

According to Malang, the suspect was wanted for murder on a warrant issued by the Regional Trial Court Branch 36 in Calamba City last June.

The suspect was turned over to the custody of the Police Regional Office Calabarzon./mcm
