Today, July 4, is the 160th birth anniversary of the founder of the Marikina shoe industry, the late Laureano Guevara, who was also known as “Capitan Moy.” In 1881, he opened his own shoe shop and introduced shoemaking in his hometown, Marikina. A historical marker honoring him as the “pioneer of the shoe-making industry in Marikina” was installed at his birthplace in 1970.—Schatzi Quodala, Inquirer Research
