Superal nips Baraquiel in playoff to capture Southern Ladies crown

Princess Superal displayed steady nerves when the stakes were highest and pounced on Sunshine Baraquiel’s errors in the playoff hole to capture the the 49th Southern Ladies golf tournament crown yesterday at the Cebu Country Club in Banilad.

The two ace lady golfers remained tied after three rounds with similar 166 points after submitting identical final round scores of even par 72s good for 54 Molave points at the end of 54 holes, thus forcing the playoff duel.

However, the 15-year old Superal played more like the veteran in the gut-wrenching playoff reaching the par-4 18th, the first playoff hole, in two strokes.

Baraquiel then missed her drive off to the left and compounded matters with an approach shot that hit a tree that sent her ball out of bounds. Pressure-free, Superal calmly sank a par putt to win the championship.

Baraquiel finished with a double-bogey to settle for runner-up honors.

The win was Superal’s third victory this year after ruling the RSGC 15-under class in Malaysia and the Montecillo Cup.

Jayvie Agojo also closed out with 54 points and finished third with a 161 while ICTSI teammates Sarah Ababa and Lovelynn Guioguio ended up tied at 158 after submitting 52 and 53 points, respectively.

CCC’s Hannah Wong took the Class A crown with 137 points after posting a 43 yesterday, beating Del Monte’s Sofia Chabon (46-133) and Riviera’s Kwon Seo Yon (41-131). Forest Hills’ Violeta Pegels topped Class B with a 120 after a 38, holding off CCC’s Eva Hino (41-117) and Alta Vista’s Junia Gabasa (37-117).

Jung Ja Bae, also of the host club, captured the Class C plum with a 110 after a 38 for a whopping eight-point win over Leni Cabili of Aguinaldo (33-102) and Mactan’s Genelyn Inot (35-102) while Mary Ang of Forest Hills bagged the Class D title with a 95 after a 39 for a two-shot victory over Davao’s Rohelyn Revilleza (33-93) and teammate Evelyn Alcantara (21-72).
