AN Inter-tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) is expected to bring in more rains in Cebu this week, the Mactan office of the state weather bureau Pagasa said yesterday.
Pagasa weather analyst Armand Dunadanag said they recorded 10.4 mm of rainfall in an hour last Friday night, which they already considered “heavy.”
Based on Pag-asa standards, more than 7.5 mm of rain within an hour is already considered heavy while 2.5 to 7.5mm of rain is classified moderate. Less than 2.5 mm in an hour is considered low.
Last Thursday, rains flooded the streets of Mandaue City and downtown Cebu as Pag-asa recorded 30 mm of rainfall in three hours.
Dunadan said residents in coastal and flood-prone areas should monitor the rise in water level and continuous soil movement.
He said the rains of the past few days can render mountainside areas vulnerable to landslides.
Dunadanag said limestones that absorb soil faster would collapse due to excess water.
The Pagasa forecast showed that Visayas and Mindanao will experience mostly cloudy skies with rains and thunderstorms.
The rest of Luzon will be partly cloudy with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms mostly in the afternoon or evening.
Light to moderate winds will prevail over Visayas and the rest of the country with coastal waters being slight to moderate. Reporter Candeze R. Mongaya
