DepEd says Tisa classroom shortage to be solved in July

The Department of Education said classes in Tisa II Elementary School in Cebu City will  likely normalize in the first week of July.

Cebu Schools Division Superintendent Rhea Mar Angtud said they are working closely with the contractor of the school’s new building for it to be completed and ready for use by the first week of July.

The public elementary school has resorted to two class shifts per day and a shorter time period per subject to accommodate all classes.

Tisa II Elementary School principal Jeralyn Rico earlier said a sharp increase in the school’s population this school year compounded the delay in the completion of their new building which has 32 classrooms.

Rico said enrolment in their school as of June 5 was 4,055 or about 20 percent higher than  last year’s population of 3,400.

Meanwhile, Donald Crisologo, principal of Mabolo Elementary School denied reports that they will move some kindergarten and grade 1 classes from their present classrooms that are  located in a flood-prone area.

Kindergarten teacher Elvie Escobal earlier told Cebu Daily News that floodwaters in their classroom can rise as high as an adult’s chest.

CDN also reported that six classrooms used by kindergarten and grade 1 classes may have to be transferred if the plan to demolish dilapidated classrooms  in a flood hazard area pushes through.

Crisologo clarified that handling classes outside the classrooms may not be possible because their 72 classrooms from kindergarten to grade six can already accommodate all the pupils.

“I will never allow my teachers to hold classes outside the classrooms because I don’t want the learning process of the pupils to suffer,” Crisologo said.
