MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) in Region XI on Wednesday said it will respond to and submit a verified return within 10 days in compliance with a writ of kalikasan issued by the Supreme Court over the P23.52-billion Samal Island–Davao City connector bridge project.

In a statement, DENR Region XI said it is preparing a “non-extendible submission” with “accurate, complete, and science-based information” to assist in the deliberation of the environmental concerns raised before the Supreme Court.
DENR Region XI reaffirmed its commitment to enforcing the environmental impact statement (EIS) system and ensuring that projects within its jurisdiction comply with all environmental laws and requirements.
“We are fully prepared to cooperate with the judicial proceedings and will provide all relevant technical documents, environmental assessments, and compliance records as may be required,” the statement said.
The writ of kalikasan is a legal remedy that protects citizens’ constitutional right to a balanced and healthful ecology.
The High Court granted the writ after scientists and environmental groups filed a petition in April against the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), the DENR, the Samal Island Protected Landscape and Seascape Protected Area Management Board, and the China Road and Bridge Corporation. /jpv
