DepEd summer program logs high turnout, proficiency gains

The Department of Education (DepEd) recorded high turnout and improved English and Filipino proficiency among 70,000 students through its Bawat Bata Makakabasa Program (BBMP) over the summer.

MANILA, Philippines – The Department of Education (DepEd) recorded high turnout and improved English and Filipino proficiency among 70,000 students through its Bawat Bata Makakabasa Program (BBMP) over the summer.

In a press release, DepEd said the program tallied an 80.83 percent average attendance for over 70,000 student beneficiaries over five weeks. The department also noted improvements in third-grade students’ reading proficiency, with 32.85 percent reaching grade-level standards in Filipino and 26.04 percent in English.

DepEd added that fewer students were classified as “low emerging” readers—the lowest of three tiers in reading and comprehension skills as of the end of last school year.

Launched on May 8 in the Zamboanga Region, BBMP uses phonics-based instruction and daily 20-minute reading sessions to help non-reader students from Grades 1 to 3. The program is part of DepEd’s broader strategy to strengthen reading comprehension in early education. /jpv
