DOH: Dengue cases starting to rise again

MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Health (DOH) logged 123,291 cases of dengue nationwide from Jan. 1 to June 7 but said the situation is “manageable” so far.

The DOH said an increase in the number of cases was observed among children ages 5 to 9 years, which reached 27,358. The health department urged the public to start controlling the reproduction of the disease’s mosquito vector.

The DOH also urged a strong awareness campaign with the Department of Education. For the period April 27 to May 10, DOH data showed 6,192 dengue cases.

Meanwhile, a total of 6,270 cases were recorded from May 11 to May 24, reflecting a 6 percent increase. The DOH said the fatality rate as of June 7 remained low at 0.4 percent, or four deaths out of 1,000 dengue patients nationwide. /cb —PNA
