DSWD opens rehab center for girls in Cebu

MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) opened its Regional Rehabilitation Center for Youth exclusively for girls in Consolacion town in Cebu on Friday.
The facility is meant to provide dormitories, therapy rooms, activity areas and other services for girls in conflict with the law, the DSWD said in a statement.
The project was a collaboration between the Juvenile Justice and Welfare Council, an attached agency of the DSWD; the Department of Justice and the Cebu provincial government.

“Young women and girls face distinct challenges that are different from their male counterparts. These include higher vulnerability to trauma, abuse and societal stigma,” DSWD Spokesperson Irene Dumlao said in the statement.
The facility aims “to provide a safe, nurturing and healing space for girls in conflict with the law,” Dumlao added. /apl
