MANILA, Philippines — Students are now eligible for a 50 percent discount on all train rides starting Friday, Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon said.
The discount applies to all three major rail lines in Metro Manila: the Light Rail Transit Lines 1 and 2 (LRT-1, LRT-2) and the Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT-3).

According to Dizon, the increased discount aligns with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s directive to ease the financial burden on students and their parents, especially with the recent opening of the school year.
“We will be increasing the discounts for all students on LRT-1, LRT-2, and MRT-3. The previous 20 percent student discount has been ordered by the President to be raised to 50 percent,” Dizon said in an interview with reporters at LRT-2 Antipolo station.
“Starting today, students will receive a 50 percent discount, and that will continue unless changes are made,” he added.
Dizon said the discount covers all students, including those enrolled in postgraduate studies.
To avail of the discount, students must present a valid student ID for the current school year or a certificate of registration or enrollment.
The discount will also apply on weekends and holidays.
Applicable only to single-journey tickets
However, the discount is only available for single-journey tickets and is not yet applicable to Beep cards.
“Technically, the Beep card system can’t be programmed for this just yet, but we’re working on it and hoping that within the next few months, a solution can be implemented,” Dizon said.
“For now, students can avail of the discount by purchasing single-journey tickets at the counter,” he added./mcm
