MANILA, Philippines — A Palace official on Wednesday expressed hope that the Senate will take notice of some business organizations’ call to begin the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte.
The push to expedite the impeachment process is reportedly meant to preserve the country’s economic stability and sustain the investors’ confidence.

At a press briefing, Palace Press Officer Claire Castro emphasized that President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. remains hands-off regarding the impeachment process.
“But if that is what our business people and investors in the Philippines see — they are experts in these matters – what will be better for the economy,” Castro noted.
“So, let’s remember, the President simply said follow the Constitution and the rule of law. So, if speeding up the impeachment trial is what the business sector sees as necessary, let’s hope that the Senate will also give it attention,” she said.

In a statement on June 9, the Makati Business Club urged the Senate to proceed with the impeachment case against Duterte.
“We view this issue as a governance issue and a test of public accountability and the rule of law,” the group said.
“If we do not follow the rule of law, how can we expect to attract foreign, and even local investors, to bring in long-term investments, which would lead to the creation of jobs?” it asked.
Meanwhile, the Justice Reform Initiative (JRI) believes no one is above the Constitution.
It criticized the senators for allegedly putting politics over the law.
“The impeachment complaint, while potentially precarious to the political career of Vice President Sara Duterte, is also her best opportunity to prove her innocence against allegations of culpable violation of the Constitution, betrayal of public trust, graft and corruption and other high crimes,” the group said in a statement on June 13.
“Any attempt by the Senate to remand, defer or dismiss the Articles [of Impeachment] without trial is not merely irregular, it is unconstitutional,” the organization added. /apl
