MANILA, Philippines — Twenty-four dump trucks or equivalent to 48 tons of garbage were collected in a cleanup drive at Maligaya Creek in Caloocan City, the Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) reported on Wednesday.
The MMDA partnered with the Caloocan City government and the Department of Environmental and Natural Resources to streamline the multiple cleanup operations along Maligaya Creek near the La Loma Cemetery exit and San Pancracio Parish in Barangay 120.

From the reports of the MMDA Flood Control and Sewerage Management Office, the operations yielded tons of garbage from the canals, the items ranging from plastic bottles to food wrappers.
MMDA general manager Procopio Lipana said that the operations were a component of the “Bayanihan sa Estero” program, devised to clear waterways and drainage systems to mitigate flooding in Metro Manila ahead of the rainy season.
“Through this initiative, we would be able to remove waste from drainage systems that could worsen flooding during heavy downpours,” Lipana said in a statement.

Lipana also advised the public to dispose of their wastes responsibly to prevent extreme flood conditions.
Meanwhile, the MMDA assured that all 71 pumping stations that the agency manages are fully operational and working at full capacity.
