MANILA, Philippines — Less than a week before the opening of classes, the local government unit of Makati City has provided laptops and school supplies for the city’s public schools.

Makati City Mayor Abby Binay, who led the distribution of laptops at the Nemesio I. Yabut Elementary School on Tuesday, recognized the importance of this equipment in easing the workload of teachers.

“Our teachers deserve the tools to help them adapt to modern teaching methods and technology. These laptops will allow them to plan lessons better, access online resources, and manage their workloads more efficiently,” Binay said in a statement.

Binay said that the teachers and teaching staff will receive a total of 1,410 laptops.

The mayor also said that the city extended benefits to elementary, junior high, and senior high school students to help with the financial burden and for them to attend their classes with confidence. Binay noted that the parents will no longer have any reason for their children to skip classes.

“Noong una, sinasabi—baon? Meron na kaming libreng pagkain sa school. May Project FEED kami. Tapos wala na ring problema sa uniporme. Dati pinapatahi ‘yong uniform, ngayon libre na. Sinasabi, walang sapatos? Libre na rin ang sapatos. So, there is no reason for parents na sabihing nag-drop out o hindi nag-aral ang anak nila,” she added.

(At first, they were saying– allowance? We have free food in schools. We have Project FEED. There is also no problem when it comes to uniforms. Before, they had to tailor uniforms, but they are given for free now. No shoes? They are for free now, too. So there is no reason for parents to say that their children will drop out.)

Meanwhile, the city also prepared emergency kits to strengthen the schools’ disaster preparedness program. These include 13,698 emergency go bags, 12,179 adult hard hats, and 5,650 small hard hats for students.

Each emergency go bag contains emergency supplies such as water, food bar, emergency blanket, hand crank flashlight, whistle, ID card holder, sterile gauze pads, povidone wipes, surgical face masks, packs of towelettes, N95 respirator mask, and wound gel.
