Two men nabbed for drugs

Two men were arrested after they were caught carrying illegal drugs in a checkpoint in barangay Looc, Mandaue City.

Angelito Arcaya, 42, and Winston  Juntilla, 43, both residents of sitio Bato, barangay Ermita, Cebu City, tried to evade the checkpoint but were eventually cornered after a brief chase with police.

The two men were on board a Mio motorcycle when members of the Opao police station flagged them down on A.C. Cortes Street on Sunday afternoon.

Police said Aracaya, who drove the motorcycle, failed to present a driver’s license.

When frisked, Arcaya tiled six packs of suspected shabu.

Recovered from Juntilla were two syringes. One of the syringes contained Nubain, said police.

Police said further investigation will be made after Arcaya admitted that he was a member of a gun-for-hire group.

Senior Insp. Stephen Amamag-id, chief of Opao police, said Arcaya’s admission came after a text message was found in his cell phone where someone asked how much he would charge to kill someone.

Amamag-id said Arcaya admitted that he was involved in separate killings in barangays Kamagayn and Pasil in Cebu City.

Lending firm worker killed

A DRIVER of a lending firm was shot dead by a motorcycle-riding assailant in barangay Guadalupe, Cebu City.

Fernando Morales, 46, a driver of GSJ Lending Company, was eating tempura (a street food) outside a convenience store in Englis V. Rama Avenue past 4 p.m. yesterday when he was shot by a backrider of a motorcycle driven by another man.

Morales suffered gunshot wounds in the stomach and arms. He was brought by relatives to the Chong Hua Hospital where he was declared dead by an attending physician.

Police said the perpetrators, who did not cover their faces, fled toward V. Rama Avenue.

Police recovered four empty shells of a .45 pistol  from the scene.

2 cops gets cash aid

TWO policemen who were among the victims of the fire in Barangay Luz early this month received cash donations and grocery items.

The media covering the police beat and the Cebu City Police Office organized a concert for a cause last week to raise funds for the two fire victims.

Yesterday, they distributed P8,000 from the proceeds of the concert and packs of rice and noodles donated by Scarlet Nadela to SPO2 Ariel Coloscos of Sawang Calero Police and PO2 Philip Plasus of Guadalupe Police.

A show band and also performers from the media like Malou Inocando Tabar of The Freeman and Edison delos Angeles of dyAB performed to entertain those who attended the event.

Cebu City police led by Senior Supt. Melvin Buenafe were among those who flocked to the concert.

Farmer gunned down

A 41-YEAR-OLD farmer was shot dead while having dinner outside his house in barangay Lawaan 2, Talisay City, southern Cebu on Sunday night.

Police said revenge could be the motive in the killing of Larry Dela Torre, a native of Guihulngan, Negros Oriental.

SPO1 Mikie Espina, investigator of the Talisay police, said dela Torre was jailed in 1998 due to a murder case. He was released in 2003.

Police said no one was able to identify the assailants, whose faces were covered with handkerchiefs.

Police said the assailants arrived in the victim’s house past 6 p.m. on separate motorcycles. Without warning, the perpetrators opened fire and drove off.
