BOGOTA – Hundreds of protesters poured Sunday into the streets of the Colombian capital to protest the brutal rape and assassination of a 35-year-old woman in one of the city parks.

The march began at a local church, which held a memorial service for the victim, Rosa Elvira Cely, who was raped and brutally beaten at Bogota’s National Park on May 24.

The woman died at a hospital four days later.

The demonstrators carried flowers and placards declaring “Not one more,” “Life sentence for the rapists,” and “No more violence against women.”

Various civic organizations issued statements condemning violence against women and demanding justice for Cely’s daughter.

“We regret the death of Rosa Elvira and reject violence,” said Cristina Plaza, the high councillor on women’s issues, who took part in the march. “We want quick justice in such cases because impunity is a form of violence against women.”
