MANILA, Philippines — Manila Mayor-elect Isko Moreno vowed on Tuesday that he would not run for a higher position in the 2028 national elections, citing his promise to the citizens of Manila.
In an interview with ANC, Moreno said he would seek reelection in 2028 and finish his three terms as mayor if given a chance.
“I’ve committed to the people,” Moreno said in Filipino.
Moreno, who ran in the 2022 presidential race, acknowledged the sentiments aired on social media that other politicians may ask him to run as vice president or senator in the next elections, but he said that he would stay in the local seat.
“That is the wish of political analysts. It is only their wish. But I think I’d rather stay in Manila for the next 10 years, if given a chance by the people,” he said.
He went on to emphasize his strong commitment to his constituents in Manila.
“I’ve also said that to the people. I don’t have to promise it to anybody, but I have made a commitment to the people of Manila, especially to our grandfathers and grandmothers, senior citizens,” he added.
Moreno also shared his goal of creating a “10-year plan” for Manila. The plan aims to address minimum basic needs, such as “housing, education, healthcare, and jobs,” as well as the cleanliness and orderliness of the city.
