MANILA, Philippines — The Land Transportation Office (LTO) suspended the driver’s license of a Manila police officer after he pulled a firearm on a motorcycle rider he had an argument with.

The officer, who was likewise on a motorcycle, was angry at the rider for an altercation during a traffic jam in Santa Ana, Manila, where the cop was assigned for security at a school on election day last May 12, according to the Manila Police District (MPD).

In a statement on Saturday, the LTO said it preventively suspended the police officer’s driver’s license for 90 days.

“A show cause order was already issued to the police sergeant who was also directed to submit a written explanation on why his driver’s license should not be revoked,” LTO Chief Vigor Mendoza II said in the statement.

The police officer allegedly violated Republic Act 10054 or the Motorcycle Helmet Act as well as RA 4136 or the Land Transportation and Traffic Code for obstruction of traffic and being an “improper person” to operate a motor vehicle, according to the LTO.

“He was also directed to surrender his driver’s license immediately on or before the scheduled hearing on May 21,” the LTO said.

For its part, the Philippine National Police (PNP) already placed the officer under restrictive custody, pending investigation in administrative cases for grave misconduct and conduct unbecoming of a police officer. /cb
