Jose Palma, lyricist of the Philippine national anthem, was born on June 3, 1876, in Tondo, Manila. A member of the Katipunan, he began writing poetry at the age of 17. Palma wrote the Spanish poem “Filipinas,” which became the lyrics for “Himno Nacional Filipino.”—Schatzi Quodala, Inquirer Research
