Village chief shot dead in Cagayan

TUGUEGARAO CITY — A 72-year-old village chief in Barangay 2, Enrile town, Cagayan province, was gunned down by motorcycle-riding assailants on Friday, May 9, police reported.
Bernardo Gacuan was reportedly about to enter the barangay hall when two men on a motorcycle approached from behind and shot him multiple times at 2:20 p.m.
Witnesses said the gunman was wearing a black long-sleeved shirt and gray pants, while the driver wore a jersey-style sleeveless shirt and black pants. Both suspects were wearing helmets.
Gacuan was rushed to St. Paul Hospital in Tuguegarao City, where he was declared dead on arrival.
Police Brig. Gen. Antonio Marallag Jr., regional director of the Cagayan Valley police, said a manhunt operation is underway.
Investigators are reviewing security camera footage in the area to identify the suspects. As of this writing, authorities have yet to determine the motive behind the killing./mcm
