‘Dangerous’ heat index seen in 26 areas — Pagasa

MANILA, Philippines—Twenty-six weather monitoring stations across the country recorded a “dangerous” heat index on Friday, according to data released by the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa).

A quick look at Pagasa’s data would show that the country’s highest heat index on April 25 is recorded in Dagupan City in Pangasinan at 45°C.

A heat index of 45°C falls well within the so-called “danger” threshold as it may cause “heat cramps, heat exhaustion” – and even “heat stroke with continued exposure.”

Meanwhile, Pagasa’s monitoring stations in the National Capital Region are expected to record a heat index of 40°C. This applies to Pagasa’s monitoring stations at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport in Pasay City as well as the Science Garden in Quezon City.

Although a 40°C heat index does not reach the danger threshold, Pagasa still warned residents in these areas to be “extremely cautious” as continued exposure under the sun with this type of heat could still cause heat stroke.
