MANILA, Philippines—On Monday, expect top Quezon City police officials to drop by schools to give away their contact numbers.
This is to ensure that students have a faster way of reporting peace-and-order problems should they arise in the schools.
Quezon City Police District director Chief Superintendent Mario dela Vega said all 12 police station commanders will visit schools within their jurisdiction starting on Monday as classes open.
Dela Vega told reporters the visits are meant to assure students that their station commanders are personally involved in keeping peace and order in schools.
“The station commanders are required to conduct school visitations regularly,” Dela Vega said, adding that the strategy was part of their effort to reduce crime.
Among the 12 police stations in Quezon City, Dela Vega said, the Batasan police station has the highest student population.
Quezon City has a total of 268 schools and universities, both public and private.
Senior Superintendent Joel Pagdilao, deputy director for operations, said police officials will be handing out their contact numbers to students, teachers and school officials during the visits.
“We want to make them feel safe by assuring them of the officials’ personal involvement,” he added.
Pagdilao said that students can inform the station commanders directly of any crime incidents they are aware of through the contact numbers.
He pointed out that the school opening also ushers in a spike in petty crimes against students, such as snatching, picking of pockets, and outright robbery.
Dela Vega added that some students also suffer from extortion by out-of-school youths or bullies.
The QCPD has also set up police assistance desks in the vicinity of schools, to be manned by policemen and volunteer parents.
Deputy director for administration Senior Superintendent James Bucayu said they will also deploy 457 policemen and 443 “force multipliers” consisting of barangay watchmen and traffic enforcers.
