PNP stays on heightened alert for summer, to deploy 40,000 cops

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine National Police (PNP) said its alert status would remain heightened for the summer and it would be deploying 40,151 officers.

The PNP has been on heightened alert status ahead of the start of the local campaign period.

However, its public information chief Randulf Tuaño said the police force anticipates an influx of tourists and homecoming overseas workers for observances such as Valor Day, Veteran’s Week, Holy Week, Labor Day, and Flores de Mayo.

“Our heightened alert will stay… Our alert status will not change,” Tuaño said in Filipino at a press briefing in Camp Crame on Thursday.

“The PNP has ordered all its units to ensure that our streets, transport terminals, tourist destinations and other crowded places are safe,” he added.

This initiative by the police force for the summer vacation is set from April 1 to May 31.

For its part, the PNP Highway Patrol Group will be deploying 736 of its personnel to 219 locations across the country to secure the roads during the season, according to spokesperson Lt. Nadame Malang.
