MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Health (DOH) on Friday reported 922 cases of measles-rubella nationwide from Jan. 1 to March 1 this year, a 35-percent increase from the 683 cases recorded for the same period in 2024.

The DOH, in a statement, also said from Feb. 2 to March 1, five regions saw increases in measles-rubella, namely National Capital Region, Cordillera, Bicol, Western Visayas and Soccsksargen.

In a statement, Health Secretary Teodoro Herbosa said measles is a very contagious disease that could be spread by cough and sneezing.

“A child with measles can infect 16 other children. That is why it is important that we prevent the spread of this disease,” he said.

The secretary said that if measles were not treated immediately, it could lead to serious conditions, such as pneumonia and brain infection, as well as death, especially among children below five years.

“This disease can be prevented by vaccines such as the MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) vaccine. Let us get jabbed at the nearest government health center,” he added.

The DOH chief said is continuing its MMR vaccination program from children aged nine to 12 months. This month, it will also conduct “catch-up” measles immunization for infants.
