MANILA, Philippines — Senate President Francis Escudero is taking a firm stand against rushing the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte.
“No amount of signatures will amend the law nor convince me to violate it by convening the impeachment court during recess and without complying with the requisite conditions precedent,” Escudero told reporters.

His remarks were in response to the People’s Impeachment Movement’s campaign to collect at least 1 million signatures by Pentecost Sunday, June 8, to convince the Senate to convene sooner as an impeachment court.
Escudero has repeatedly said the Senate would only hold the impeachment trial once sessions resume. —Tina G. Santos
