MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine National Police (PNP) had launched a probe into the alleged donation by suspected Chinese spies of motorcycles to the police force.

The development was disclosed by PNP – Crime Investigation and Detection Group chief Brig. Gen. Nicolas Torre III on Saturday when asked if the national police force follows certain guidelines in accepting donations from non-government organizations and foreign entities.

“I believe that the chief PNP had already ordered the inquiry on that matter para malaman kung ano ang puno’t dulo dyan at yung exact circumstances ng donations na ‘yan,” Torre said at the Saturday News Forum in Quezon City.

 Torre also said that the PNP follows guidelines whenever foreign entities donate equipment to the police force.

“It could have been donated to the local government which the PNP really does not have any control. I don’t want to speculate,” Torre pointed out.

When asked if the PNP found any irregularities in the donated motorcycles, Torre said that the case is still “subject to investigation” and it is too early to arrive at a conclusion.

A Reuters report revealed that Wang Yongyi, Wu Junren, Cai Shaohuang and Chen Haitao made donations to Tarlac City and the police force through Chinese-backed groups in 2022. 

It also stated that Wang, Wu, and Cai donated 10 Chinese-made motorcycles worth around $2,500 each to the Manila police.

The report likewise said that Wang was seen in an article published by Shandong ACFROC’s social media account where he gave a check worth P500,000 labeled as “poverty alleviation bursary” to the mayor of Tarlac in July 2022.
