Impeach trial all about rebuilding integrity of Supreme Court, says De Lima
MANILA, Philippines—The Corona impeachment trial was not about politics, political struggle and personal vendetta, Justice Secretary Leila De Lima said Wednesday.
She said it is about “the fight to uphold and put into practice the solemn and vital principle that public service is a public trust.”
She added it is time to rebuild the integrity of the Supreme Court and the Office of the Chief Justice.
“We now have the opportunity to rebuild the integrity and nobility of several important government institutions that are vital to the promotion and preservation of our democracy under the Rule of Law, namely, the Supreme Court and, of course, the office of the Chief Justice itself and we in the administration are well aware of our respective obligation in ensuring that such opportunity is not wasted,” De Lima said.
Corona now holds the record of being the first highest official in Philippine history to be removed from office by impeachment.
