MANILA, Philippines — At least two people were killed and 75 families were left homeless in the fire that gutted a residential block in Makati City early Wednesday, according to reports culled by INQUIRER.net.

Senior Fire Office 1 Juan de Guzman said one of the victims died on the spot while the other was declared dead on arrival. Their identities are not known.

The blaze, along Kalayaan Street, Barangay (village) Singkamas, started at 4:58 a.m. and reached Task Force Charlie before it was completely put out at 7:30 a.m., he said.

De Guzman said that the fire spread through the houses because of their closeness to each other.
