MANILA, Philippines — Vice President Sara Duterte on Friday discouraged supporters from taking their disappointment on her impeachment to the streets.

Duterte said it will be better for them to work instead.

She cited the high prices of basic commodities as the reason why jobs cannot be disrupted.

“Sa panahon ngayon na sobrang mahal ng presyo ng mga bilihin, lalong lalo na ng pagkain, sasabihin ko sa mga supporters, sa taumbayan, na unahin na muna nila ang trabaho and negosyo nila kesa mag-rally sila sa daan,” the vice president said in a press conference.

“Lahat tayo, breadwinners. Merong mga bata na nagde-depende sa atin,” she explained.

(We are all breadwinners. There are children who depend on us.)

Duterte instead encouraged her backers to express their sentiments on social media.

“Tayo naman ang social media capital ng buong mundo,” she noted.

(We are the social media capital of the world.)

“Kung gusto talaga nilang magsalita at tumulong, doon na lang sila sa social media kung saan nakakatrabaho pa rin sila pero nagagawa nila kung ano yung nararamdaman nila, na gusto nilang gawin—at yun ay magsalita at marinig sila ng taumbayan at mundo,” Duterte further said.

(If they want to speak and help, just do it on social media so that they can still work and at the same time, they can express whatever they are feeling, what they want to do – and that is to speak up and to be heard by the fellow citizens and the world.)

The House of Representatives on Wednesday impeached Duterte with 215 lawmakers voting for a resolution for this purpose.

The Articles of Impeachment was transmitted to the Senate for trial.
